As the elevator doors opened to the top floor, I smelled Penny’s floral body spray before anything else. I tried to put on my best smile as I stepped out of the mental prison I preferred not to enter if I could. But, today? My body felt a bit more tired than usual.

And it didn’t take Penny long to spot the fact that my smile didn’t quite reach my eyes.

“Not the kind of lunch date you wanted?” she asked as she stood from her chair.

I handed her the smoothie. “I thought you’d like one.”

She took it quickly from my hand. “You’re a lifesaver. Thank you so much for this.”

“Solid food still doing you dirty?”

She flopped back down into her chair. “Not so much now that I’m in my second trimester. But, I still get queasy sometimes.”

“Sorry to hear that.”

“Now,” she said after swallowing the most enormous gulp I’d ever seen in my life, “what happened on this lunch date? Am I beating someone up?”

I snickered. “I promise, it wasn’t anything like that.”

“Then, what was it? Do you want to talk about it?”

I shook my head. “Not right now. I have to get back to my desk where, hopefully, I can stay distracted enough to get through the day. But I promise Dune didn’t fuck anything up. I’ve just got a lot going on, and I don’t have any way to sort through it right now.”

“All right, well… how about a girl’s night this weekend?”

“Is Mikael working late at some point in time?”

She waved her hand in the air. “Like always. It doesn’t bother me, though. I know I’m gonna practically get sick of him once the baby comes. He’ll be hovering like a dog in heat.”

I barked with laughter. “Hell of an image there, Pen.”

She smiled brightly. “I do my best. So, how does Friday night sound? You, me, snacks, and smoothies?”

I raised my smoothie in the air. “Sounds like a plan to me.”

And as she rattled her Styrofoam cup against my own, she quickly stood and threw her arms around my neck.

“You know I’m always here if you need something,” she whispered.

I hugged her tightly. “I love you.”

She kissed the side of my head. “I love you, too. Let me know if you need anything before Friday.”

“I will, I promise.”

The rest of the day passed pretty much in a blur. I remembered sitting back down at my desk after visiting with Penny, but I didn’t remember much else until people started knocking their fingers against my desk to say goodbye for the day. The letters kept rushing around in my head. The startling text messages filled the forefront of my mind. How in the absolute fuck did that man get my phone number? How did he know where I worked? It was all too much, and I was starting to think that maybe--.

Bzzt, bzz-bzz-bzz, bzzzzt.

The second I heard that vibration pattern, I froze. I didn’t want to look over at my phone. Something in the pit of my dark soul already knew what the hell I’d see once I looked over.
